International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) Powerchair Hockey has launched a search for top-quality hosts for its 2022 World Championships.
The competition is the biggest and most prestigious event on the sport’s calendar. The last Worlds in 2018 took place in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy, and attracted eight teams from Europe, the Americas and Oceania.
Under the banner of #asneverbefore organisers raised the bar. IWAS Powerchair Hockey is now looking for a local organising committee who can take the competition to the next level once again.
The news comes as the federation looks towards the future following the postponement of the 2020 European Championships in Pajulahti, Finland, to 2021.
Speaking in a letter to countries, IWAS Powerchair Hockey Chairperson Fabio Rodo, said:
“We proudly look back on a very successful IWAS Powerchair Hockey World Championship in 2018: the efforts of the Italian organisers with all the volunteers, the high-level games of all the participating nations and the enthusiasm of all of those spectators and sponsors made it a great success.
“Now it is time to look forward to the upcoming IWAS Powerchair Hockey European Championship that will take place in Finland in 2021 and to the next IWAS Powerchair Hockey World Championship.”
Those interested in bidding can find out more information on the sport’s website. The closing date for bids is 31 July 2020.
“Besides the roads to the Paralympics [IWAS Powerchair Hockey aims to be on the programme], it is an excellent opportunity for your nation to show the world the development of powerchair hockey in your nation and worldwide,” Rodo concluded.
